MODULE 1
SCRIM LIGHTING 101
We’ll start with the fundamentals: the different types of scrims on the market, how to choose the right size and diffusion, and how to safely set up your scrim from start to finish. I’ll also share the foolproof camera settings I use on every shoot.
MODULE 4
SIDE LIGHTING SET UPS
Side lighting can add incredible depth, dimension, and story to an image. I’ll show you how to create a soft side-light setup that feels like window light, along with a sunnier, more directional look that brings shape and energy into the scene.
MODULE 2
CREATE ANY LIGHT WITH A SCRIM
This module will give you the foundational understanding to create nearly any lighting look. Using product setups, you’ll learn how to control hard vs. soft shadows, long vs. short shadows, shadow direction, and how much detail is retained in the shadows — all with one light and one scrim.
MODULE 5
overhead lighting set ups
Overhead lighting is one of my favorite ways to use a scrim because it can create polished, high-end results with a surprisingly simple setup. You’ll learn where to position your lights above the scrim so your subject or backdrop are evenly lit without hot spots or uneven falloff.
MODULE 3
frontal lighting set ups
You’ll learn how to create soft, flattering frontal lighting for portraits while still maintaining depth and dimension in the skin. We’ll also recreate a natural-looking hard-light setup that preserves beautiful detail in the shadowed areas.

The course is organized into five easy-to-follow modules, so you can move through it at your own pace and revisit any lesson whenever you need a refresher. With 24 videos and over 90 minutes of content, most lessons are intentionally short and focused—making it easy to complete the course in one sitting or work through it as you re-create the lighting setups.

To recreate the lighting setups in this course, you’ll need an 8×8 scrim, 1–3 strobe or continuous lights, and a few C-stands and sandbags to safely support your setup. In Module 1, I’ll walk you through which scrim is right for you, where to buy it, and exactly what you need to get started.

The lighting setups in this course range from approachable fundamentals to more advanced techniques, so you can put them into practice now and continue growing into them as you take on bigger clients and productions.
This course is best suited for photographers who already feel comfortable using their camera in natural light and have at least some experience working with a studio strobe—even if you’ve only dabbled with one so far. If you’re picking up a camera for the very first time, I recommend getting comfortable with those basics beforehand.

You don’t need access to a dedicated studio to put these setups into practice. My first makeshift studio was in my living room, and many of the setups in this course can also be created in a garage or other open space.
The one exception is the overhead scrim setups in Module 5, where I recommend working in a studio or large space with high ceilings.

Absolutely! All of the setups can be applied with either strobes or continuous lights, although your exact settings and output will vary.

Breaking into the commercial industry felt lonely, and what’s worse - I didn’t even know if my work was good enough TO land a big clients.
I was shooting weddings every weekend, seniors throughout the week, and squeezing in product shoots whenever I could — all in hopes of eventually transitioning into commercial photography full time. But I knew my work wasn’t where I wanted it to be. Natural light felt unpredictable, and traditional studio lighting often left my images looking flashy or flat.
After years of experimenting with different lighting setups, I discovered scrim lighting, and it completely changed the way I worked. For the first time, I had a level of control that felt both flexible and intuitive. I could make small adjustments in front of a client without second-guessing myself, which gave me far more confidence creatively and professionally.
The biggest shift came when the type of clients I had always dreamed to work with started noticing my work. As my lighting became more refined, so did the opportunities. That growth has led to shoots for brands and publications including Target, People Magazine, Disney, Crocs, Ulta Beauty, and Fabletics.
Today, I shoot roughly 80 days a year, and about 80% of those shoots rely on a scrim as a primary lighting tool. That means on approximately 64 shoots each year, scrim lighting is the tool I rely on to shape the look, solve problems on set, and bring the creative vision to life.
